The founder of Tesla and SpaceX believes in doing all things brilliant and at times, slightly bizarre. In a recent – very interesting – turn of events, Elon Musk announced that he was planning to put a car on Mars. Yep! That’s what he said.

After announcing that his reusable, heavy-lift launch craft known as Falcon Heavy will launch next month from Cape Canaveral, he went on to tweet something, that invoked quite a few OMGs from the twitterati.

He began by saying that Falcon Heavy’s launch next month was “guaranteed to be exciting, one way or another”.

He then revealed, what can be called one of the weirdest payloads we’ve heard of. He claimed on its first trip to space, his rocket will be carrying a Tesla Roadster into space. Yep, he finds it kind of cool to have his car floating about in space.

Just to make things musk-y, it will be playing David Bowie’s Space Oddity while “deep in space for a billion years or so if it doesn’t blow up on ascent”. Oh, well.

In short, it’s entirely possible that the Mars rover may not be the only vehicle to roam the land of Mars. Tesla’s midnight cherry-coloured Roadster might just be good company.
